I was born in a family engaged in chikan work for ages. For his unique skills and fascinating products, my great grandfather was honoured by the then President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and my grandfather was honoured as ‘Shilp Guru’ by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. I, therefore, inherited the skills and love this craft. I have been doing chikan work for the last five years now. However, working with Kraft Corridor for last one year has been a different experience altogether, as i have learnt new stitches, learnt to do costing of products, product sampling and learnt about the fabrics. Its an enriching experience. I am proud to be part of the team who want to take with craft to a new level and to new places.
I started learning chikan embroidery when i was 14 years old. I have studied till Std XII. I was married off at the age of 19 years and , therefore, got involved in household chores. When my husband left me with my small daughter of 1 year, I had to come back to my mother’s house. I had 4 siblings and my father who was the only earning member had passed away. I then had to fall back on my skills to earn for our living. When I joined Kraft Corridor last year, i got the courage to move ahead in my life with dignity. I learnt many other skills like working in computer, setting of samples for final production and coordinating with sales and marketing team.
